Post Date: 2012-11-01 Working out harder - not longer - reduces the risk of heart disease. It prevents metabolic syndrome - a combination of risk factors including obesity and high blood pressure. A study published in BMJ Open tracked peoples' baseline fitness habits, including workout length and intensity, for 10 years. Those who brisk walked or jogged 2-4 hours a week reduced their risk of MS by 35%-50%. It seems intense exercise "revs up" the cardiovascular system, lowering MS risk factors. Nineteen percent of inactive people develop metabolic syndrome. They don't put the "heart and sole" - of their exercise shoes - into healthy living.

Flu vaccine may lower risk of heart disease. A Canadian study analyzed 4 previous studies involving more than 3,000 people - average age 60 and some with previous heart disease. Participants were randomly assigned to get a flu shot, not to get a shot or to get a placebo shot. Then they were tracked for 1 year. Regardless of heart disease histories, those who had flu shots were 50% less likely to have a heart attack or stroke and 40% less likely to die from one. The flu clogs arteries with plaque and lowers levels of oxygen. Preventing those can prevent "heart-rending" events.

Extra pounds increase the risk of hospitalization. A study published in the International Journal of Obesity obtained the body mass index (height-weight ratio indicating degree of fatness) of about 250,000 adults ages 45 and older. Over the next 2 years the researchers discovered the risk of hospitalization increased 4% for every one BMI point increase - regardless of lifestyle and other health-related factors. One point equals 6-7 pounds. Extra weight seemed most linked to hospitalizations for diabetes, heart disease, chest pain, arthritis and asthma. Sixty-nine percent of Americans are overweight or obese - and seem to be "weighting for the other shoe to drop".

Lifelong smoking cuts women's lives by about11 years. A study published in The Lancet tracked more than 1 million women - average age 55 - from 1996 to 2011. Participants were surveyed about their lifestyle and were re-surveyed 3 years later. At the study's start 20% were smokers, 28% were ex-smokers and 52% never smoked. Those who stopped smoking by age 40 reduced their risk of dying from smoking-related diseases 90%. Those who stopped by age 30 reduced their risk 97%. The results of this study were similar to studies done with men. Obviously, we haven't "come along way, Baby".

What Every Parent Should Know About Deficiency In Milk Posted By : Low Jeremy

Post Date: 2010-12-04 Deficiency of milk may exist even at a very early period after delivery, and yet be removed. This, however, is not to be accomplished by the means too frequently resorted to; for it is the custom with many, two or three weeks after their confinement, if the supply of nourishment for the infant is scanty, to partake largely of malt liquor for its increase. Sooner or later this will be found injurious to the constitution of the mother: but how, then, is this deficiency to be obviated? Let the nurse keep but in good health, and this point gained, the milk, both as to quantity and quality, will be as ample, nutritious, and good, as can be produced by the individual.

I would recommend a plain, generous, and nutritious diet; not one description of food exclusively, but, as is natural, a wholesome, mixed, animal, and vegetable diet, with or without wine or malt liquor, according to former habit; and, occasionally, where malt liquor has never been previously taken, a pint of good sound ale may be taken daily with advantage, if it agree with the stomach.

Regular exercise in the open air is of the greatest importance, as it has an extraordinary influence in promoting the secretion of healthy milk. Early after leaving the lying-in room, carriage exercise, where it can be obtained, is to be preferred, to be exchanged, in a week or so, for horse exercise, or the daily walk. The tepid, or cold salt-water shower bath, should be used every morning; but if it cannot be borne, sponging the body with salt-water must be substituted.

By adopting with perseverance the foregoing plan, a breast of milk will be obtained as ample in quantity, and good in quality, as the constitution of the parent can produce, as the following case proves:

I attended a lady twenty-four years of age, a delicate, but healthy woman, in her first confinement. The labour was good. Every thing went on well for the first week, except that, although the breasts became enlarged, and promised a good supply of nourishment for the infant, at its close there was merely a little oozing from the nipple. During the next fortnight a slight, but very gradual increase in quantity took place, so that a dessert spoonful only was obtained about the middle of this period, and perhaps double this quantity at its expiration. In the mean time the child was necessarily fed upon an artificial diet, and as a consequence its bowels became deranged, and a severe diarrhea followed.

For three or four days it was a question whether the little one would live, for so greatly had it been reduced by the looseness of the bowels that it had not strength to grasp the nipple of its nurse; the milk, therefore, was obliged to be drawn, and the child fed with it from a spoon. After the lapse of a few days, however, it could obtain the breast-milk for itself; and, to make short of the case, during the same month, the mother and child returned home, the former having a very fair proportion of healthy milk in her bosom, and the child perfectly recovered and evidently thriving fast upon it.

Where, however, there has been an early deficiency in the supply of nourishment, it will most frequently happen that, before the sixth or seventh month, the infant's demands will be greater than the mother can meet. The deficiency must be made up by artificial food, which must be of a kind generally employed before the sixth month, and given through the bottle.

Should Pregnant Women Consider Omega 3 Fishoil Health Supplements? Posted By : Peter Leigh

Post Date: 2010-07-22 There is distinct proof of the significance of the polyunsaturated fatty acids referred to as the Omega3 essential fatty acids and particularly DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) and also EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) in the developmental process of the human fetus and child. (And for that matter for a lot of individuals right throughout their life.)
Previously many health professionals advised against nutritional supplementation with Omega 3 fishoil dietary supplements containing the Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids for mothers-to-be and nursing mothers..
However the evidence is increasing that an adequate supply of the essential fatty acids and in particular DHA is essential for adequate growth of the fetus and child. And in particular to the brain development of the fetus and child, as well as in other areas of health.
It can be usually considered that infants who are breastfed have got a better rate of brain growth than others which are brought up on formula. Several experts suspect that the reason is for this is the fact that moms breast milk contains DHA in particular, whilst bottled milk usually does not.
Addititionally there is evidence that premature babies are deficient in DHA. It's also suspected that the reasons that this is the case is that they have not gone through the 3rd trimester of pregnancy which usually is the time when most of the DHA required for good development of the infant is put down.
Scientific studies are now showing that preterm babies lower in DHA can increase their rates of mental and cognitive development where nursing moms complement their eating habits with omega-3 fatty acids tablets or where formula fed infants are fed DHA fortified bottled milk.
And it is not just premature infants. There is certainly apparent proof that an adequate level of the Omega3 efa's in the diet of all toddlers is essential to the development of the baby in a variety of different areas including mental development.
While the debate remains over whether or not expectant or nursing moms should supplement their own diet and the diet of their babies with the Omega3 fats now there is little argument over the fact that most of us, and naturally that includes pregnant and nursing women, are deficient in the essential fatty acids known as the Omega 3 fats. This is a result of the decline in our intake of seafood over the last hundred years.
Fish and particularly oily fish is the primary source of the Omega-3 fats in our diet.
Regardless of whether or not a pregnant or breastfeeding woman should augment her eating routine with fish oil pills is a subject between the woman and her medical professional. Nevertheless the research is developing that babies need adequate amounts of the fatty acids in their diet for proper development.
Find out more about the essential fatty acids DHA and EPA and particularly about omega3 supplementation.
